Redundancy help

Pay is approx £5.50 an hour! Rubbish i know but this is not london but wales!

I have to decide by monday. Just waiting for Citizens advice to open (10am) to get info on benefits etc.

£5.50 an hour at fulltime hours is about £10k a year ish...

That makes your redundancy offer pretty good (most firms cap redundancy payments at a max of 6 months wages, which is what you've been offered).

Given that, I'd definitely say leave. That's barely above minimum wage, and mimimum wage (or more than) is fairly easy to come across.

It's not worth screwing up your health over something like this.

It's also worth remembering that if it's a proper redundancy payment, it's tax and NI free, so it is £5k in the hand, not 5k less all the taxes.

Good replies guys. Some good advice.

I dont want to rely on benefits but i need some help while looking. Don't want to dip into Redundancy money. Also, i am on the sick too, not well enough to work yet.

If you can afford to survive on a part time job, go for it. In my opinion, if going back to work made your condition (for want of a better word) worse then something is wrong there. Your health and your families health should come first.

Remove the job, maybe remove the stress? It's certainly worth a try.

Good luck with the baby :)

In your position I'd take the money and then start looking for part time jobs that should be less stressful.

Perhaps look to work for a smaller family business or in something quite customer focused rather than something that will have you labouring away all day.

Something like work at a garden centre or similar where you can have a bit of a chat with people when it's not too busy and that kind of thing.

Bloody good offer considering the circumstances...Bite their hand off if I was you, whilst you still have the option!

Not sure if taking the Redundancy is the right move. I mean, my wife is going to be off with Maternity leave soon and her wages go down by half then! Might be better off staying on the sick as i get 6 months full pay and then 6 months half pay. I was off for 6 months last year with the same problems.

Update: Got until this Wednesday lunchtime to decide wether or not to take the redundancy money. I have got an interview tomorrow for another job so i will see how that goes! Thing is, technically i am still on the sick so a bit of a confusing time!

like has already been said minimum wage (or just above) jobs arent too hard to come by, so by taking redundancy you've got 6 months (going by your yearly wage) to find another job. It's a bold step to leave a job you dont like, but much better than being in a job you dont like and not having a redundancy to fall back on while you seek another job. (ok there's benefits but who's to say you dont find a job in a few weeks and end up happier + pulling in another wage + £5k to spend on the little one)

Hope you're happy with the decision you make!

Update: Now decided not to take the redundancy but to stay on the sick and see what happens. No way i can go back yet as i am not well enough and i do get 6 months full pay then 6 months half pay.

Take the money dude because there's a good chance they might sack you if you continue taking time off sick. If they are making other redundancy’s they are obviously trying to cut costs. Someone who takes months off at a time would be a prime target for compulsory redundancy if it happens again.

£5.50 an hour not exactly a great loss is it really. Sounds like they were taking advantage of you anyhow so you'd be better of to get out

As i wrote before, these are 'Voluntary' redundancies that are being offered. They can't sack me for being ill.

It is a large organisation that i work for.

I have spoken to the personnel dept and they have told me that i have thier full support. Hope they mean it.

Anyway, if they ever did give me compulsory redundancy then at least i would be entitled to immediate benefits.

Also, when my wife goes back to work next April, after her Maternity leave, i will be home looking after the baby so by then i will have to leave my current employment if they don't offer alternative working hours of which they have said they will try to help me.
