Just a quick question, if a couple of collegues are being offered voluntary redundancy and we all work in the same dept (i.e. accounts / Sales / I.T.) and we do similar jobs does the option of voluntary redundancy have to be offered to us all?

I know with job vacancies they cannot be offered to only 1 person the whole company has to know about them and be able to apply to them but I didnt know if the same applied to redundancy,

thanks

Well when there were redundancies in our place we had a meeting & were explained what was happening. Everyone except maybe the apprentices (as they weren't affected) received a letter explaining the numbers that would be going from each dept.

The letter also explained that anyone wishing to take voluntary redundancy could do so by applying in writing, although just because you applied for it didn't neccesarily mean you'd get it.

It all boiled down to the company wanted rid of certain individuals but to keep things proper everyone was notified. Someone from an outside body was also brought in to deal with the proceedings. I'd imagine our company done things the way they were meant to be done for fear of unfair dismissal claims being filed or whatever.

Thats only how in happened in my case, I don't know how it's meant to be done so would be worth your while asking someone who's sure if it's a major concern.

I was made redundant early last year, the company notified everyone that the numbers would be dropping across the company.

In my case they were cutting 5 positions down to 2 and i was given the option to reapply for one of the vacant roles or take redundancy which I choose cause im not doing 2 other peoples jobs as well.

this happened across the company and they cut the work force down to a quarter of what it was, the dept heads were told that they had to reduce there head count by x and they then had to identify were the cuts had to be made.

so I your case they dont have to offer it to you at all if they want to keep you on.
