Graduate schemes, especially ones administrated by HR have always taken the michael. They completely fall apart when someone has not gone through the traditional path. Even if say, you've got work experience in the exact job your applying for they don't want to know. It's mostly laziness and being able to apply automatic filters as opposed to reading the application.
