Is there a huge difference beyond noise?
I'm trying to decide whether to get the current 290 sapphire with ref cooler or just get a 7950 or similar with branded one?

From just the designs of them looks like it would be more than just noise

The problem with the 290 Ref- cooler is its crap, the cooler itself, the bit inside is the same as the 7970 Ref- cooler, it was never even good enough for that so it useless on a 290, thats why they run hot and loud.

Even a cheap £30 after market Air cooler will drop the temps by 20c, and the noise.
 
Wow, extremely useful to know. I'll wait! Didn't realise it was an old ref cooler
