So,

These are available:

And I'm stuck here with my reference r9 290.

Any idea if any of these coolers are compatible with the reference r9 290?

I was going to get a gelid icy vision/accelero xtreme III but I figured I might buy one of the custom coolers off of someone who's getting an r9 290(x) and puts it under water - or even trade my ref. (if you guys are considering this, send me a PM :) )

Also, will the mounting/demounting of the cooler be easier/harder with these non-ref?

You will have to google for PCB shots and decide yourself, I don't think people have inspected them and shared results yet. I think the DCu II is a custom PCB but not 100% sure.

The accelero extreme III destroys all custom design coolers in performance, and pretty much all the ref 290's clock better then the customs so far.

There are a few forum members with that cooler fit on the 290X and 290.Even Toms' HW did a review with it.Mid 50's at full load.I just dont see these non ref coolers that awesome.

I heard troubling stories from accelero xtreme 3 and gelid users - The VRAM is not sufficiently cooled, which causes issues when OCing. I've seen people mounting alpenfohn vram heatsinks to help with that, but the results vary from person to person - in worst cases the heatsinks fall off.

I want to avoid these issues by mounting a custom pcb that was designed for 290. I guess I'll have to wait some more and see the results.
