Reference from a past employer

Hello,

Right I need a reference from my past employer. That would be myself, my sister or my mum or dad the last time I actually worked outside the family businesses would be 1991. What I could do is keep quiet about it and hope they don't sniff out that my business partner is actually my sister.

So what would you do? fess up or shut up.

In your case I'd just be honest about it

"The only person that I can give you a reference from is my sister as I've worked with her for the last 20 years, and she'll definitely give you an honest reference, that ***** hates me!"

Or something along those lines

Be honest, nothing wrong with working for the family business. References are just to make sure you did actually work there and didn't steal the post-its.

I had a similar problem, in my entire working life I've only worked at five places. Four of them no longer exist and the fifth was the local council who, for some strange reason, refuse to give anybody references. It was a bloody pain.
