So my 5870s fan has just started rattling. The card is 6 months old and up until now its been fantastic, running overclocked 900/1300 no problems at stock volts in Overdrive. Bought from OcUK in Jan.

The fan seems like it is catching on the outer cowling of the card. It is mounted in the usual fashion in a tower with the fan facing toward the bottom of the case. The fan has some play in it, as the noise is intermittent and sometimes catches, sometimes its fine, and sometimes when it is catching tapping the fan upwards stops it temporarily.

So is it ok to just RMA it seeing that its been unlocked in Overdrive and overclocked? Not RMA'd anything before so not sure what to do, and could do without the hassle!

Also I closed my OcUK account when I had some suspicious acitivity on my debit card in Feb. It was mainly a precautionary measure but someone used my details to order a laptop from another website with the delivery address in Stoke, so thought I had better be safe than sorry seeing that this website was the only place I had ordered anything close to that time.

Anyway going off topic, just RMA the card if I am able to?

Cheers!

Try pushing down on the centre of the fan, see if it clicks at all. If not rma, you might solve it by taking the card apart but I wouldnt risk it.

+1, i remember somone having the same prob on here a few months ago with a brand new card, he was told by OC'ers to click down on the fan and it worked for him

My card was brought from clockers in feb 2010 and the same thing is happeing to mine not sure where to go next do i speak to xfx or clockers ? i have tried to fill in the rma form on oc site but got a bounce back saying order number not found . the reason for this is that i went to the shop and brought this card i still have the receipt

If your card is still under RMA then replace it if your cards warantee covers thermal replacment then you could fix the fan yourself.

all it requires is taking the stock cooler off and tightening the 3 mini screws that hold the fan to the shroud. they have probably become loose.

no its still has rma with clockers . i have tried to fill the rma enquiry out but got bounce back as its asking for order number . i dont have that unless its on the receipt

I had this issue a month ago. it took 28 days and they ended up sending me a brand new 5870.

My symptoms were that the fan started rattling then after 2 days the card couldnt POST at all.

So they ended up replacing the card rather than repairing.

My replacement however had a new type of heat sink and fan on it. Hopefully this won't start rattling.
