So, the Alfa has gone. For real this time, not a troll thread.

I thought I'd share my experiences of a new Alfa and maybe someone will find it interesting...

I had an Alfa Romeo 159 with the new 2.0 Diesel engine and in "Turismo Internazionale" spec which basically meant I got some really, really nice 19" wheels shod in RE050A rubber, red 330mm Brembo brakes with 4-pot calipers, sporty leather seats, bluetooth, auto lights/wipers, dual zone climate, lovely "Ti" sill plates, hill assist and... er... crappy mats. Pretty well specced really!

Delivery mileage was 55 miles and as I watched it disappear it had about 6900 miles on the clock, so I had done a decent number of miles in the time I had it.

First things first: What broke

Within a few days of picking it up, I noticed the carpet on the drivers side was coming away from the transmission tunnel. This turned out to be that the carpet was "too small" and so had to be re-carpeted. I got to bomb round in a MiTO Veloce for a day whilst they sorted it out.

Then there was the call to say that the gearbox might have been "the wrong one" - turns out it was some mistake in Italy and my gearbox was the right one.

After that was .... nothing. Thats it! I expected to spend most of my time hurtling about in courtesy cars whilst everything was getting fixed but no, quite reliable really expecially as I opened the taps wherever I could :D

The Good

I really liked driving it - from the weight of the power steering through the really rather small steering wheel to the way it gripped through corners it just felt great to drive. The 19" wheels compromised the ride a bit but not Audi levels of bad, although when really pressing on it could be a bit unnerving but never scary. At 1490KGs it was no balerina but it hid its weight better than I expected and never ever felt heavy.

The gearbox was absolutely superb. The throw was just right, the gate was just the right balance between precision and you needing to be a surgeon to get it in on a fast change. Gear ratios were diesely but perhaps a bit shorter than most which seemed to suit my driving style.

The engine... for a 2L 4 cylinder it diesel was actually quite refined and when fully warmed up sounded quite good from the drivers seat. Loved to rev, no ridiculous surge just a smooth delivery from 1500rpm (when the turbo started to spool) to 5,000 rpm when the fuel would be cut. If I was really, really going for it I would stay in gear that long if there was an advantage to do so, else I'd change at 4-4.5k.

The Bad

Well there isnt much that I can really say that was bad, but there are a few things to comment on...

The fuel economy was DREADFUL. The first motorway run I did was to the Southampton meet just 3 days after getting the car and I got an astounding 31mpg on the 200 mile(ish) motorway cruise there, without any shenanigans. That loosened up after a while, but basically cruising at 70mph I would expect to get no more than 39mpg. My long-term average over the entire 6,850 miles was 34mpg. What were they thinking?!

Unforgivablely terrible was the blue+me / entertainment system. Unforgivable because it could have been so, so good - but it would just do stupid stuff. Make a call from your handset? It would turn the stereo up to FULL VOLUME before making a horrendous noise and then connecting your call. Every time.

Plug in your iPod/iPhone and tada, there was all your music - just worked, no hassle (even with my water damaged iPod which was prone to misbehaving). Skipping a track was impossible for a passenger as it could only be controlled on the steering wheel - where skipping a track (or a track ending and a new one coming on) would show you what was playing for 15 seconds - during which you were unable to do anything at all. Incoming call? Cant answer! Make a call? Nope. Current MPG? Nope. In the middle of pairing your phone or in fact changing any settings? Settings gone.

What were they thinking?!

In summary

I loved it - the looks were stunning, the seats are quite honestly the best car seats I have ever sat in (MILES better than the leather sports seats BMW fit in the 320d M-Sport, I did a direct comparison) and it generally attracted admiring looks and the odd comment.

Would I have another? Not with that engine (unless it was another company car, for tax reasons) and only in the right spec and with a warranty.

Should you get one? If your fleet manager is on drugs or you are sleeping with him/her, absolutely. Stands out a mile from the usual BMW M-Sports and Audi S-Lines you see everywhere - it isn't the complete package by a long way but you'll love the experience :)

DRZ was kind enough to chuck me a set of keys and I took it for a spin a few months ago as well. I'll just do a quick paragraph as I only did a few miles.

Performance isn't bad, but it's still a 4 cylinder diesel so it still suffers from the nothing WHOA nothing power delivery, annoying noise and irritating vibrations. But the rest of the car? I hate to say it but it's actually quite nice. The build quality is leagues ahead of the 156, the seats are fantastic, the momo steering wheel was great to hold and the handling wasn't too shabby either. A credible Mondeo alternative. Infact, I'd probably have one over a Mondeo.

I had my 147 from 15 miles to 100,000 for 5 years, apart from the cam belt debarcle every 36k I thoroughly enjoyed mine and wish I kept it.

Alfas, terrible cars ;)

Interesting to read how you got on with it - if you don't mind me asking what are you replacing it with?

At the moment I have borrowed my sister's MINI Cooper. Could be a £300 mondeo, could be an M3, could be an MX-5 - not really sure yet.

I have a LOT of thinking to do about my car situation now :(

Lovely looking cars, and yes, agree with Fox having had 30 minutes in a 2.2 JTS petrol, was enough to see the quality changes from a 156 in terms of interior finish. Progress I guess :)

although when really pressing on it could be a bit unnerving but never scary

Same here. I literally end up hammering the front bumper/undertray on anything that stands out/up from the road. Such as a 5p coin. Disconcerting feeling in the sense that you're turning, the car is behaving adequately when all of a sudden you've whacked yet another bump in the road, forcing you to re-assess for a split second. Anyway I digress into the handling traits of my own...

Now that is some praise coming from you!

My car also has the Blue&Me stuff, some of the things it does are annoying but I've kinda just got use to them, on the whole it's a lot better than having nothing and having to retro fit loads of ICE stuff from the net.

Brilliant to see that Alfa are making credible inroads with build quality and reliability.

I must admit, whatever else may or may not be wrong, the seats are great in your Alfa.

How come it's gone already anyway, I thought you'ed have it for a few years tbh.

I'll see what the Alfa Giulietta is like in a few weeks. Close friend has just bought one, it's diesel as well and has outrageously quoted fuel economy figures so it will be interesting to see what it actually does. If it's any good I quite like the Mito but I just don't know if I can quite handle having that chunk taken out of my house deposit only to depreciate to nothing. I'm not used to cars depreciating :p

i've been driving a 159 2.4 jtdm diesel for 6 weeks,
i was really shocked how good the inside and out. had same view will be broken in a week.
i think its better then bmw 1, and very close to 3. value for money alfa a good buy. but mpg on a diesel is shocking around town 22mpg :(

did a test against my old bmw 330i that was 1mpg different.

If the economy on the diesel is so shockingly bad, why on earth do so many of them sell?

Because nobody knows until they buy it, and they dont really care once they've got it. All they want is diesel, because diesel is best. The figures wont be checked, the petrol engines wont be test driven, as long as its diesel, people will order it. They dont care about economy anyway as they'll be used exactly like an A4 2.0 TDI S-Line - to travel at 100mph in the outside lane of the motorway.

These cars are mostly bought by fleet buyers, and chosen by company car users for whom the only technical factor they care about is the BIK rating.

But dont get me started or I'll be back ranting about why the 330i has died yet there are 500 different types of 2 litre diesel in the range :(

I can't find it but read Fox's post on the subject (the one where he explained the difference between a e9x 330i and 330d and how the d is hardly worth the extra when you actually work things out).

People just buy them without thinking (assuming diesel = mega MPGZ), lots on company lease as well.

EDIT: Typically 30 seconds too late!

Is the 2litre really that shocking! I get about 44 - 45 on my daily 100 mile commute from the 1.9JTDm in the GT and have just topped 104k miles with no major issues.

I must admit Alfa seats are great and I find it a comfy place to be for 2 - 2.5hrs each day!

I'm still completely stunned that a car made in 2010 with a 2.0 diesel could get such poor mpg.

It's a new generation engine! How can it be so bad?

Not always. My friend had the intelligence to check the trip computer on the test car so he could see what the mpg history was like. I don't remember it being anything amazing but it wasn't a complete shocker either.

But you're probably right about the way it'll be driven.

It can only be the way it's being driven. It's like people who trash clutches in 20K miles. They blame the car but I bet if you watch them driving they're riding the clutch all the time and nailing it away from the line.

Hmmm nice write up. I need to change my current E46 330Ci to a 4 door car (have 13month baby) and the alfa 159 2.4 JTDM was one car on my list, along side the new 3 and 5 series and A4.

It definately looks the business and glad to hear it drives well but quite shocked about the MPG. that's almost in the same territory as my 330CI, which i got to improve the MPG status after owning a RX8.

As you said it's definitely value for money, hence why i'm still considering it but i wouldn't be buying new. Do you think it's a good family car? or should i look to another BMW or get a SUV/4x4?
