I'm about to reformat my Vista machine with XP 64 however the partitions shown seem to be swapped around, my C: is a 320GB Maxtor and my D: is a 500GB Samsung Spinpoint. The partitions seem to be swapped around, my D: is showing as my 320GB from the size and my C: is showing as my 500GB from the size. Which one should I format? I don't want to lose the data on my SpinPoint as I'm backing up a lot of files from my old installation there.

I assume you are reformatting after booting from the vista disc? I'm not familiar with vista, but with xp you often find the partitions given different drive letters booting from the disc, I forget why, but have seen it. I would post in the windows forum for advice to be sure, but the partition sizes are a good thing to go by. Also, backing up is probably a good idea to be sure.

Your best bet is just to disconnect the drive you dont want to format then there can be no oh **** i need helps how do i recover data from a formated disc moments

The letter swaping maybe because you have an OS on the other drive too
