Hi

My dad wants a new car but it has to be a 5 door hatchback.

My dad has also given me a list of must haves :

Be at least a 2001 model or newer (up to 5 years old)
Must have have air con (dont mind whether it's climate control or air con)
Must be a 5 door
Leather would be nice (not essential though)
Engine size cant be over a 2 litre (car will mostly be used for short town journeys and the occasional long journey)
Must be under 80k miles but under 60k is preferred

My dad likes the new Audi A3 but he doesnt like the Sportback model (the 5 door A3) because to him (and me) it looks to much like an estate.
However, Neither my dad or i have seen the Sportback in the flesh so cant comment on how much of a estate it really looks, we've only seen pics of the web. However, looking at Autotrader the new shape A3's seem to start at about 12k so that is out of the running unless my dad can stretch his budget.
I'm sure my dad can stretch it to about 12-13k but he is being stubborn at the moment! I'll try and work him down though!

My dad prefers German cars (he's had VW's for about 15 years and loves them) but i'm trying to open him up to looking at other brands that have the same build quality at a cheaper price.

What else is there out there?

Thanks!

Presumably his mileage is quite low if the car is used mainly for short journeys. I wouldn't worry too much about mpg if that's the case as a smaller engine will make very little difference in overall fuel costs.

I would rather have my leg chopped off than pay 9k for a newish astra, sure the experiance will be more pleasurable as well.

Mondy would be my first choice tbh, such a great car for the cash.

I don't like driving them at all, at work whenever i ask for that class of hire car i tell them don't give me an astra or you can come a pick it back up again.

fair enough if you don't like em, i love mine to bits, but it is still an option for the OP hence why i suggested it

You wont be saying that once youve driven a few more cars.

Go for something like a used A3 if you can get the new shape.
