Refresh rate - higher the better?

I have a 1440x900 monitor at the moment, and almost every game I play gives me the option of either 60 or 75hz refresh rate, I was wondering if there are any advantages of higher rates? Should I stick to 75 or drop to 60?

Thank you. :)

Higher is definitely better, though I was under the impression that all non-CRT monitors nowadays are either 60hz or 120hz (the latter being high end and pretty expensive monitors, quite recent too). Unless it says in windows that it's running at 75hz then I'm afraid it probably isn't really, even if games give the option!

Our LCD monitors at work can run @ 75hz (Which I have to enable because I use a 120hz at home :D)

Just set to 75hz on the desktop as well, should make things a little smoother :)

Ah fair enough! An old TFT monitor of mine kept giving a 75hz option in games etc, but never actually switched to 75hz properly. Interesting to know that some 75hz monitors do exist!

Yes, the higher the refresh rate the better, however it doesn't matter if your card is averaging at ~60fps. You'll need to make sure you're hitting 75fps for the smoothness and gains of actually using 75hz.

I have it on 75hz right now but it seems abit blurred, like there's tiny tiny shaders on my text or something (not even joking :p). Not sure if you can tell, but I took a pic;

Weirdly it feels as if it is the same brightness but darker, if that makes sense, does that mean my monitor shouldnt be using 75?

It doesn't feel like a sharp crisp picture at all, unlike 60hz.

Could be you need to use auto-adjust or similar on the monitor to get the picture looking crisp. If you 'overclocked' CRT monitors too high they would sometimes exhibit the behaviour you describe but I wouldn't expect to see it on a TFT. I'm assuming you are using a VGA connection in which case check to make sure there isn't any interference from electric cables against the VGA lead.

As for the original question yes, higher refresh rates are better HOWEVER ideally you want the refresh rate to be a factor of your framerate (typically 1:1). So for example if you are playing a game that is capped at 60fps then 60hz may feel better than 75hz.

When I used to game on a 75hz screen I could tell the difference between 75hz and 60hz in the main online FPS I play - sometimes after a driver install it would revert back to 60hz and I could feel the difference.

go as high a res with a high as refresh rate you can get away with

but once over 60 res is way better an option

high res kicks ass over refresh over about 55 imo

sure high refresh is nice but at low res like 1080 op na

imo aim for high res and if u hit 55-60 thats fine

if u get 120 and can only play at low res it looks bad imo '

but each to there own

i would rather play at 1440 60

than 1200 60

or 1080 no matter what the refresh 60 - 120 1080 looks neandrathol . and no i cant spell it..

1080 or below is sort of ok for a tv but not games imo

high res kiks butt... as long as u hit that 55 -60

thats the way i like it others like it 120 at low res each to there own

forgot to add crt r diferent... as they really flicker at 55-60

Mate, I doubt I'll ever spent the kinda money to get a moitor resolution above 1080p, let alone the hardware to support it, that's pure vein :p

Thanks for the info people, sadly 75 looks like ass so I'll have to stick with 60, no idea why it even gives me the option.
