Not sure if this is really motoring specific, or one for general... but anyway!

I've not driven since I passed my test (15 years ago :() and as I'm planning to get a dog soon, I think it'll be pretty handy (neigh vital!) for me to have a car.

Do any of the usual motoring schools offer refresher lessons in your own car? Or is that a big no-no?

Can't see why they wouldn't, to be honest they will just tell you how to pass your test again, imo the best bet is to wait till it's quiet say 10-11pm and just go for a blast, it's like riding a bike.

Haha yeah tbh there's a large station carpark near me that I might tear around in.. err I mean "sensibly practise in" :D

It's probably worth it, assuming they'll come meet you at your house and all.
I expect you'll get a mix of the basics (they'll decide what you need to polish on the first 'lesson') and some continuation training.

You get the same thing in motorcycling with Born Again Bikers, mainly those who return to biking after raising kids and all.

"Hello, do you mind if I pay you to sit in my car for an hour." He isn't going to say no is he. They may ask you to drive their car, as it really doesn't matter which car you relearn the basics in.

Have you not been on the roads in 15 years? As in not ridden a motorbike either? If you've been on a bike for that time, I wouldn't worry. Bikers often make good drivers because of the checks and planning ahead they have to do ;)

You could just book some lessons with your local driving instructor. Just because you're not working towards your licence doesn't mean they won't happily take your money :D

When my other half wanted to drive after not doing so for 7/8 years I drove to a car park in the evening and let her get used to it again. It all comes back to you.

A driving instructor might be restricted to using a car with dual controls for insurance purposes.

Best bet is to familiarise yourself with the highway code and all the new stuff about (mainly bus lanes and traffic calming measures everywhere) and get back on the road!

My mum had refresher lessons in her own car many years ago. They clearly didn't work as she managed to write off our neighbours car, hit a kid from my school and abandon her car across a busy road because she'd "had enough", all in the space of about 6 months. :p
