Two months ago I wrote off a car on which I had just renewed VED for 6 months. I filled in the relevant form and sent it off with the disc for a refund (6 weeks ago!) but today got a letter saying the refund of VED was rejected.

It says because I am not the registered keeper or the previous registered keeper OR I am shown as the current keeper but have not told them its been sold/scrapped/sorn/stolen.

They have not returned the tax disc.

I have no V5 as the insurance company wanted that for the claim.

Stumped at what to do now.

Phone the dvla and ask them?

It was probably because you sent the disc off too soon after the accident, the relevant paperwork showing the car was now a write off hasnt been processed on their computers before your form turned up.

When you agreed a price for your written off car with the insurance company that should have included any tax left on the vehicle.
Once the insurance company have settled with you then they own the wreck and any remaining tax - it's down to them to get a refund for themselves.

Phone your insurance company and confirm if the tax disk is still yours to do with as you please or if the value of that was included in the final settlement.
