I've seen you can buy refurbished iPads from Apple direct, has anyone experience on this and can recommend or not? I'd expect them to be near indistinguishable from a new one given the price/supplier right?

They had as an option: Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi 32GB - Gold (5th generation) - £239.00

The other day, but all look to be sold out now, and only much more recent and expensive models available, £409 for a current gen iPad Air.

It's a present for a not super techy family member, so don't expect much more use than Browsing/Youtube/Facetime use. So an older slower one would be fine. I'm looking at second hadn options too, but certified refurbed was appealing.

Advice for finding a decent iPad?

They're not just nearly indistinguishable, they're probably better than brand spanking new because they've not just rolled off a production line, the've actually been through the hands of a real person. The only noticeable difference is that the box outer says refurb on it.

Bought a few iPhones from the refurb store over the years and as everyone has said the refurbs are great!

As already mentioned the only noticeable difference is that the box outer says refurb on it.

Refurb products are also able to have AppleCare added as well.

Hi there

I recently bought an iPad Pro 2018 from there and it was mint. The only difference is that the box says refurbished, but otherwise it was as new.

Would recommend it for the ability to get 1 year Apple TV+ and AppleCare if you want it.

I think you put a lot of faith in humans here! To be honest production line fresh would be preferred to me over something that was handled and human checked :)
I think a refurb unit has been ordered, so I'll get the owner to give some feedback!

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

This thread just cost me one iPad Air ;)

Keep meaning to get a new iPad as my 2014 air is really flagging now, so decided to treat myself to a new Air, 64GB grey cellular will do the job nicely.

Just cost me an iPad Mini 5, my Galaxy Tab S2 is a bit long in the tooth and needed replacing. Do like the 8" size

Went for a refurb to save a few quid and cover the cost of the official smart cover, pricey but we had a smart cover on my wife's iPad Air 2 and has lasted well.

0% finance with Barclays too.

Air arrived today and it’s nice, but now doubting the size and wondering would a mini be better :/

Wife has a mini 5 I’m 0laying about with alongside the air to see which seems best for me.

In normal times I’d be using it on the train or plane, and the increased size of the air makes me think the mini could be better for that.

With the resolutions being the same I’m not losing anything screen wise other than the size, and if anything the mini feels sharper.

So may end up returning the air and going for a mini, we shall see :)

Hmm, I think you would regret that. For me, an iPad is about bridging the gap between a phone and a laptop. A mini isn’t big enough over a phone imo

I’ve got an 11 inch pro and it’s perfect :)

Then again it is ridiculously light

Maybe, ‘only’ have an iPhone 8 and a new SE for my personal/work phones so nothing huge there.

Quite like the idea of changing the 8 for the rumoured 5.4 inch 12 whenever that appears.

Just thinking if I’m sat on a crowded train or on a flight watching something it’s a bit less intrusive for anyone sat right next to me (not sure if intrusive is the right word here, but with little sleep over the last few weeks thanks to a new arrival my brain is a little fried).

Also just realised I could set the page soon to 85% on the air to fit more on the screen to suit the size a bit better.

If you can afford it, might be worth getting the mini and comparing while you have both :)
