anyone know if student discount applies to macs in the refurb section of apples website? Think this is my only hope of being able to afford one!

probably a macbook pro. I need a laptop for uni and i want it to be useful for things such as video/photo editing etc after uni is over.

Problem is that i want to build a new gaming rig after uni too so the budget wont allow for an expensive laptop!

if i go for an mbp it will mean no gaming machine so its a matter of weighing up the pros and cons!

I think most ppl would say to go for the mbp tho!

I'm wondering the same, too.

Whether to go down the Xbox 360 / Macbook route (which seems the best for gaming fun with uni mates) or get a Mac Pro for gaming (with Vista bootcamp) and computing. Both scenarios roughly work out the same price.

What you got to watch out for there is graphics card updates for the Mac Pro. The options for macs are usually very limited and pricey compared to PC's. I gave up on Mac and PC gaming and went for a Xbox 360, I am glad I did its a good option considering the price is similar to a top end graphics card for a PC. What I am trying to say is in a year or two you will be wanting to upgrade your graphics card in the Mac Pro and you might have to shell out a lot for it.

My guess is yes.

Try googling the framerates people usually get on a X1600 256MB (or just ask in the Games seciton of the forum) and you'd have a reasonable guess :)

will give that a go.

I suppose the mac pro would be a mighty beast for gaming if it was paralled with windows. Shocking pricey though for a student.

If i go for a MBP is it worth waiting on Leopard coming out? Or will it not be too pricey too upgrade when the time comes i wonder?

Students pay £58 for Tiger.. expect the leopard update to cost the same.

Wait until the 9th of Jan (*after the Mac Conference*) before you buy a MBP.. unless they do announce Leopard :)

Also.. you'd need Bootcamp with a Mac Pro... Parallels doesn't support 3D video acceleration

Are you expecting a new laptop to be announced?? Didnt know that parallels didnt support 3d video acc. Is it perfectly feasible to use bootcamp and paralled (not simultaneously of course)

Yes, In fact I believe you can see the bootcamp partition when you run Parallels :)

I don't expect a new MBP, but maybe a newer 12" addition :)

As far as a new MacBook goes.. I doubt that either.

12" probably would be too small for what id need - video editing/web design would need a 15" screen at least!

Not sure that Leopard will come out until June meself. If it's released within the next couple of months it will be littered with bugs, according to the latest news from those sites.

so after all the hype is now the time to buy an MBP?? And just get a leopard upgrade when the time comes?

That's what I did :)

After all.. £58 in 4 or 5 months (MAX) and you're sorted again for a year or two

thanks for the info guys. If i do purchase leopard does it work the same as windows where u have to format and reinstall a new os or can u just install over the top of tiger?
