The story go's

I went to an Evans Halshaw near me ...blah blah... ended up putting a deposit on a Vauhall Astra 2004/53, 1.6 16v SXi with 18k on the clock. The final prive including all the admin stuff and warranty was £5800. The car was down south somewhere, so I left my £100 deposit and waited for them to bring it up so I could see it.

I got a phone call yesterday telling me that the delivery driver has seen the car and says in covered in dents so they aren't goin to ship it up. But there is good news, they have shipped another car for a customer that the customer has turned down (it was a 5 door and they wanted a 3) so I can have that for the same price, its the exact same car but in silver and with 32k on the clock. Ok I say, I'll come in and see it but i'm not keen on paying the same price since it has almost double the mileage.

So today I go over and the fools have sold it! (apparantly it was sold from another branch) But there is a 3rd car, same spec etc, with 20k on the clock. Great I say, I'll take that. The guy then tells me that its £200 quid more. When I ask why, he give me some spiel about cost price and net price that I didn't quite follow. As far as I was concerened the were giving me the same car for more money and inconvinencing me in the process.

I tell them I'll think about it. I go up to the dealers that the car is situated at and explain the situation and that I don't really want to give my money to them and ask them what they can offer me. They do me a deal for £6000 again.

Now the way I see it I have signed a form sayin that they will deliver/I will recieve the car described about for £5800 and feel that it is their cockup and that losing £200 is the consiquence?

Am I wrong? What would you do?

I think I'm going to ask to talk to the Regional Manager, The GM is a bit of a tool.

Cheers for any advice

This is the perfect opportunity to realise that buying:

a) A car from this dealer
b) A Vauxhall Astra Mk4 for £5800

is a daft idea. Realise your mistake and buy something decent from a better dealership :)

Why not have a look at something like a Focus Zetec, Honda Civic or Seat Leon? All 3 are better cars.

The Fox speaketh the truth.

You have been messed about a bit, but are you sure you are getting the best deal here? Maybe this is a blessing in disguise and a chance to walk away?

Walk away from that dealer / chain of dealers. If this is how you get treated when they are trying to sell you something, imagine what the aftersales is going to be like? Would you feel confident if you needed to take it back to them under warranty? WALK AWAY!

If this is from Evans Halshaw in Gateshead (next to the Stadium) then I would steer well clear of them, one guy at work has bought a car from them and their aftersales has been shocking - another has his Rover 75 serviced there and they have charged him £500 for a fuel heater and didnt even bother fitting one.

If you need any more details then feel free to drop me an email (in trust :))

Get Your £100 Deposit back as they have not delivered the car they said they would. WALK OUT and go and purchase another car elsewhere, even if its another Astra (Although i would advise against).

At the end of the day your the customer with the money and they should treat you as such. Loads of cars out there mate....

Having dealt with Evans halshaw on several occasions at work I would have to say steer well clear. Bunch of cowboys as far as I can tell.

No actual knowledge of the place, but I wouldnt dream with parting with £5000+ worth of cash to a dealer that seems as shoddy as that. Take your business elsewhere, and pay attention to the Foxmeister and maybe look at another model?

The best advice I can give is stay away from the big chain PLC car dealers - I've yet to come across one that I would actually buy a car from. Pendragon, who own Evans Halshaw and Reg Vardy are one I particularly dislike, along with Arnold Clark.

I'd put money on the original car being sold either before it was ordered up for you, or at a higher price locally so it wasn't worth the delivery costs. Delivery drivers don't give a toss about condition - they're just paid to shift the things around.

Any company that is willing to try and screw a customer for £200 on a £5800 purchase is not worth dealing with. I wouldn't bother complaining any more - just walk away.
