I've been listening to a lot of reggae recently however my knowledge is very limited.

Any recommendations on what albums/artists I should start with.

I'm currently looking at classic, modern and more alternative raggae.

Classic I'd suggest checking out Jimmy Cliff as well as Toots and the Maytals, probably also take a look at The Roots. Sorry I can't really give any more options at the moment but I'm on a different computer to normal with no access to my music collection.

//edit also remembered Max Romeo and The Upsetters, probably best known for the track Chase The Devil(sometimes remixed with Prodigy - Out Of Space) but they do have some other good tunes :)

Misty in Roots come highly recommended by me :) Good luck finding any illicitly but there's plenty of CDs to be found, I recommend Roots Controller. Seen them live twice, really good reggae, and a bit away from the standard Bob Marley stuffs.

almost everything with Sly and Robbie playing/producing is very good
Black Uhuru and an example
for alternative try Heavy Dub stuff like King Tubby, or for total madness all of Lee 'scratch' Perry's output

Go for all the Trojan box-sets. Loads of different types about. Ska / Two-tone / Reggae etc. Really good way of educating yourself and also discovering new types of ska / reggae and artists.

Really need some pointers on soca (sort of late 70s calypso). Phill Jupitus has spats of playing it when in the mood but nobody else :(
