Hi All,

Anyone using joomla with register1 VDS hosting ?

I am considering moving from dreamhosts to register 1 for a site I run. Dreamhosts are superb for space and the ability to use ssh and tweak the php as I see fit. The problem is it is soo slow from the UK.

I need to use Joomla and gallery 2 as well as be able to tweak the php to allow bigger downloads and the use of FFMPEG.

Can anyone give me any feedback on them.

Thanks

Hey, they are OK, I find their setup a bit wierd... e.g. the control panel isn't very nice, you can't set up seperate MySQL accounts (they give you a username like admin6032 and you can only change the password for it, not add/edit/delete accounts or change permissions).

They do have great support and their servers certainly aren't slow. TBH if they changed to cPanel, and had the option of a monthly billing cycle, I wouldn't be able to find anything to moan about.

Hi Furnace thanks for that.

Do you know if its possible to run more than one site from one of their VDS's ?

I have a client that runs two companies that would like a faster server space, he uses very little bandwidth and space and that hosting would do the job, can you use more than one domain name on the server ?

Cheers

They're really not going to let you use ffmpeg. I think you'll really struggle to find any shared hosting provider that will.

I am currently looking at their VDS packages too, however I will point out the following at the bottom of the VDS page

"Whilst you are welcome to host as many personal sites as you wish on your account, the Commercial reselling of accounts from your VDS is stricly prohibited, please contact Register1 sales for details on our Reseller and Dedicated Server options."

Dreamhosts were fine with ffmpeg

MM Technically he is the same company so wonder if that counts as reselling

I will give Register1 a call I think.

Cheers Guys

Dreamhost are an anomoly - they give you the world for $5/month but I think you've already discovered the downside.

If Register1 let you run ffmpeg I'll personally pay for your hosting :).

You could ask Reg1 how much for a reseller account.

reseller account involves a different admin panel, which I assume costs more for a licence and setup so there's extra costs for that.

it's not a particularly cool idea to host client accounts on a single panel, a reseller is the way to go, so that each account is isolated: better for security and easier to segregate mysql, email, and everything.

I run both type of accounts with another company. I run client work on my reseller account. For personal interest sites the one panel multi add-on domain does me well.
