I bought a car from a small dealer near me in August and i taxed/insured the vehicle before driving it and thought that was all i needed to do.

I do have VC5 form which says " you should receive your new V5C within 4 weeks of the registered keeper giving us your details".

Having received nothing a few weeks ago i sent a form off to the DVLA to request info on the registered owner and today i get a reply back saying i am not the registered owner and they can't tell me who it is.

Have i messed up?

I had this from a main dealer who had cocked up and when I let them know then they did the change and a v5c arrived in the post shortly after. I recommend just contacting the dealer and saying you haven't got v5c yet.

had ours through in about 4 weeks, the daughter who bought her car on the same day same dealer waited nearly 3 months had to keep pestering the garage . in the end they tried to blame the post.....(wondered if it was sat in a out tray somewhere grrrrrrrrr)

A lot of dealers are incredibly slack when it comes to sorting the V5 or "digging out" the "full service history" which mysteriously isn't with the car but they'll "promise" they have it to send on to you :s (which may or may not exist despite the advertising even from an established dealer). Once they've got the money and you've left their premises very different story.

Just send the new keeper slip with a V62 form. You'll probably have to pay as you've not done it in 4 weeks.
This, I had to do it when I bought mine a few years ago. I could have spent time chasing up the dealer but for £20ish I just sent it off and had the v5 a week later
