Hi all,

I am trying to register a domain name, and a bit confused by the privacy option godaddy are giving.

Doing a little bit of googling, it looks like this privacy service (£5.99/domain) replaces your information in the WHOIS database to avoid spamming etc.

However it seems that then you are not the legal owner of the domain name and that whatever details are used instead become the legal owner?

Could someone shed some light on what this privacy service is and is it worth it? If I don't get the privacy service, all my details (address etc) are available for the world to see?

Thanks

EDIT: I'll mostly be using it for email (to save hassle when changing ISPs) so would want to use [email protected] is this easy to setup?

As far as I was aware, with a .uk domain (including .co.uk as well as .*.uk), so long as you aren't a business (ie trading and earning a profit using the domain name), nominet include privacy at zero cost?

EDIT: For what it's worth, I use 123-reg for domain registration.

Certainly if you use a .co.uk domain (and I assume other .*.uk domains), you set up the account with your details and set the privacy option as a private individual and the WHOIS lookup will only show your name.

I don't recall a charge for this when I set up the .co.uk domains I use.

Ah ok, maybe its worth looking for a .co.uk then.

Is 123 reg the best? or Godaddy? etc?

and is it worth buying multiple years?

The only real benefit to multiple year terms is a slight reduction in price, and less frequent need to renew :p

I tend to stick to UK registras for UK domains, hence 123-reg.

I used to use 123-reg but I didn't like it when I discovered they wanted to charge for you to create a sub domain on a domain you already owned. There dns management is therefore not as complete as some. Last time I used Crazy Domains and found them to be better.

Erm, they don't charge me for anything assuming you have domain registration and name servers as your only services.

I have hundreds of subdomains, never paid a penny. You're doing something wrong.

In their control panel, under subdomains it says...

You can now buy subdomains from 123-reg! Each subdomain costs only £10 per year or 10 for £80.
For example, if you have example.com registered with 123-reg you can now set up http://product1.example.com/ and redirect users to http://www.example.com/products/1/ and have any email sent to @product1.example.com sent to [email protected].

Since I think this should be free, and I questioned them about this in a support ticket, due to feeling it was out of line with other providers, I started migrating away from them. They were rigid on this policy of theirs, hence I started moving away from them since I felt it was rather a hidden / stealthy way of charging more after you'd already bought your domain.

You can buy a subdomain of domains they own, but you can add DNS entries for whatever you like if you own the domain.tld

Here you go, subdomains on 123-reg, free and easy...

Thanks, it seems they didn't understand my question then as I was only given the option of buying a subdomain and there was no mention of this being anything to do with one of their own 123reg domains.

Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 9th February 2013.
If you wish to have a subdomain on your 123-reg account, and use it for a web forwarding service, then you will need to purchase this service, which is 10 pounds + VAT, which you can do by following the steps in the below support article:
http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Domains/Domain-Administration/how-do-i-buy-a-subdomain-278/
Once you have a subdomain package, you can use the below support article and point it to an IP address:
http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/an...an-i-point-a-subdomain-to-an-ip-address-2173/

If we can be of any further help with regard to this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Are you only pointing your subdomains to one of their IP's for some hosting space you have with them or are you also able to point it to some other web host address?

I have no hosting with 123-reg, all my DNS records point to various services like office 365, my web hosting and my VPC.
