Is it a good idea to register a bunch of domain names and point them to your website,

For example, if I have a company called Acme Trading LTD that specialises in selling widgets, I could have a website called www.acmetrading.co.uk

I could then go and register www.widgets.co.uk, they also sell disposable widgets so www.disposable-widgets.co.uk, www.reusable-widgets.co.uk and www.wigets.com etc etc

If you registered a handful of these and for your other products as well, would this help direct hits to your site?

Afaik, as long as you ensure your extra domains are pointing to your main direct using a 301 redirect, the search engines shouldnt penalise you.

Lots of companies do it with multiple domains :)

If you have multiple domains as your original post mentions, I think the best way to do it (in terms of SEO relevency etc) is so the acmetrading.co.uk just goes to your main site, whilst widgets.co.uk and disposablewidgets.co.uk point specifically to those relevent pages on your website.
