Registering domains - details

This is a bit of a stupid question, apologies!

I am about to register a domain, with register1 hopefully. I was wondering is it possible for my details that I register my domain with not to be available to be seen by others?

Is this possible?

.co.uk - free to opt out if you are an individual (not a business)
.com/.net etc normally incurs a charge iirc

As jonno.co.uk says, if you're an individual registering a .uk domain name Nominet allow you to opt out of having your personal details available via the WHOIS registry. See this page for more information.

As far as I know ICANN have no such policy, and it's up to you to go through a third party to disguise your details. A number of providors do this for a small fee; most notably GoDaddy and Namecheap. They do this by putting in their own details instead of yours; essentially taking control of the domain on your behalf, but you're (relatively

) safe doing this with a reputable company. I'm not sure if this is against ICANN regulations, but it's been going on for years now and these services haven't been shut down yet
