Registering for a doctor. A delectable rant by codec

Well before any of you give the stupid "medical thread!" I'm not asking for advice. I'm ranting as per thread title.

Last week I had a flu virus, it didn't make me *feel* ill, but I had diarrhoea and couldn't pee for 5 days (only drips) and when I finally did - my number 2 passed about half a pint of blood (yeah a lot of blood there) so I rushed to hospital, they took a blood test and my pulse. Fine. so they asked for a stool sample and sent me on my way. Great.

so roll on today and I get my stool sample. lots of blood etc etc. go to the doctors and they don't have me on record so I need to register. To do this I need my nhs number, to fill out a form, ok so I take the form home, fill it in, bring it back, forgot the proof of address. so I go home, come back with a council tax letter and the woman says its not good enough???? how the hell is it not good enough? It has my address and is dated this month!?

she says it's gotta be a utility bill or a bank statement!? I say "do you have some sort of incentive scheme with the banks? what the hell does it matter so much that I am refused to see a doctor?!"

All I wanted to do was to drop off my sample so I can find out whats wrong with me. And now I can't do that. I don't have any bank statements because the bank is incompetent of sending them to my address, I don't pay gas and electricity because it's in the price and they wouldn't accept my letter from the council!

Well it does appear to be that proof of address seems to only come form a bnak or utility bill. I recall when we were changing a bank account from a single to a joint account, the only proof of address leter we had at the time fro my wife was a letter from the Home Office, stating her address and indeed confirming it as her residence.

But, if its not on the list they simply won't accept it. This is just the society we live in, there is no room for people to think or make decisions based on their own sence, as that might be checked by a probity team later and the person found wanting....

I can sympathise with the proof of address aspect . As I don't get paper statements for my accounts anymore - It's saving the environment, at least that's how they sold it to me... More likely saving the banks paper and postage.

Don't think I've ever had to provide proof of address when changing GP's. I would suggest registering as soon as you move into a new place, that way you avoid needing to faff about with it when 'stuff' goes 'wrong'.

I didn't need to provide proof of address to register at my local clinic. Or the last one. Or the one before that.

As for not accepting the council letter, that's ridiculous. It proves you live where you say you do, so by most sane definitions that's proof of address.

Flu's don't stop you peeing or make you crap blood, nor do hospitals send you home with such symptoms and tell you to take a stool sample into your local gp without notice, if they did they'd ask if you had a GP, which you didn't.

Not peeing, is a serious kidney problem most likely, crapping blood, also serious.

Either you were absolutely awfully treated by your local hospital or its another fake thread.

If you have either symptom to any degree i'd be down at the hospital asap personally.

I also personally get irked by people diagnosing themselves because, they have none of the symptoms of the thing they've diagnosed themselves with, not being able to pee, dodgey stomach and crapping blood aren't symptoms of the flu in general, especially if you don't have the main flu symptoms of feeling ill with it.

Why is it also that people who do post threads asking for medical advice that get closed are always lame threads... I've got a headache, or, theres an axe stuck in my back, should I go to the doctors.

But the threads that say this isn't about medical advice, its about how the NHS works, then go on to describe symptoms that often the OP should be going to the ER for straight away, but they don't focus on the stupidly dangerous symptoms, but how some form stopped them bothering to get further help.

erm, you clearly didn't understand the op when I stated I rushed to hospital.

all they could do at the hospital was check my blood. they aren't going to tear my body open without having the first idea of what the problem is and I had just taken a dump. I wasn't able to give a stool sample on the spot nor was I keen to either.

so yes as they cant do any more tests without a stool sample the only thing they could do was send me home. They seen no reason to keep me there and I agree with them, without anything to work with there is no point in me being there. which is why they gave me the sample pot. I would have dropped it back into the hospital but it was on the other side of london. I'm not gonna carry some poo across london underground. I wanted to give it to my gp to pass on as per normal procedure. but trying to get a GP was ridiculous. I have spoken to other people tonight that tried to go to that surgery and they said they couldn't register either and gave up. maybe I should just look elsewhere. In the mean time when I go to the toilet, stomach acid burns my butt and I lose more blood. but 'tis just a scratch really.:rolleyes:

p.s
I'm not diagnosing myself - I'm stating what I seen. poo, and blood. I don't need a phd to know that.

you diagnosed yourself with flu, despite not being able to pee, pooing blood, and not feeling ill, thats simply not the flu. Not being able to pee, for 2 days, you should get some help.

If you're losing a half pint of blood in your bowels or stomach, a decent doctor would keep you under observation for a few hours incase you're bleeding internally and not send you away, its an incredibly stupid thing to do. Likewise theres ways of looking at your insides without cutting you open and other tests that can be done. Or simply have you sit there for a few hours till you can go again and check you don't die of blood loss in the meantime.
