Sky have gone full retard so my net access wont be active until the 22nd of this month. I want Skyrim and BF3. I understand Skyrim needs Steam to be online to register when you first get it, does BF3 need net access as well?

Last night I tethered my Tesco Mobile iPhone to the PC and tried to access Steam but after it sat there for about 10 minutes trying to update, I found out that the ports that Steam uses are blocked at an IP level.

Is there anyway around my problems? Can you register a retail copy of Skyrim through the Steam website? I can access that through my mobile, so that could be an option.

I expect I will have the same problems with BF3 and EA's version of Steam, does anyone know if their application will be blocked?

Short Story: I have normal net access through my mobile on my PC but not access to the Steam application due to blocked ports. EA's version of Steam will probably be the same. Can I buy and play Skyrim or BF3 without a proper internet connection?

Cheers.

You need origin to activate BF3 and you need an internet connection on your pc.There is no other way round it. It's the same idea with steam. You need an active connection in order for the game to verify/unlock itself. You can't do this through a website on your phone.

If you know someone with a mobile broardband dongle, you could plug that in, and that will do the job. I did this myself with DeusEx HR on steam using an orange dongle whilst i was waiting for a sky installation.

Cheers for that.

One thing I didn't mention is that after I found out Tesco Mobile block the ports Steam use, I tethered my girfriends Orange phone up to my PC, and whilst it allows Steam to run, the reception in my house is abysmal and Steam wouldn't login. I do however have a laptop.

Therefore another question:

If I install Skyrim on my laptop and drive to somewhere with good Orange signal to register the game on steam, can I then copy the files over to my PC when I get home and play the game?

A convoluted solution, but probably only an hour of my time:p

You could use a VPN to get around the Tesco Steam block.

You would need to take the PC with you. Copying the files across won't work.

Any recommendations on which VPN software and service to use? Preferably free as speed etc doesn't matter.

In the same situation here. Some ****** stole a load of cable and half the town are without phone/broadband. They stole it last Tuesday and my copy of BF3 turned up Weds morning :(
Luckily broadband came back up for the weekend, but now it's down again for more repairs. Typical as I have 9 days till I need more plex in Eve online too.
I 'kin hate ******.

If it's a steam based game should work fine.
I have all my games on an external drive and just drag the ones I wanna play to the machine I wanna playe em on.

Unless Skyrim is somehow different?

Yes it would.

The game would allready be activated on his Steam account so all he would need to do is allow it download a few files onto the Notebook, copy the game folder from his Notebook into his Steam folder.

Copy game files from DVD into the game folder in Steam.

Launch Steam, job done.

The main thing is have there been any big updates since launch compared to the data on the discs?

Yes, it should work by copying the files from one pc to another. Again, That's exactly what i did with DE/HR. I downloaded the whole game on my dads pc at his house (obviously logged into my steam account there) Once it downloaded i copied the game directory to a spare hdd. I then got back home, opened steam up on my pc, started to download DE/HR from the steam servers so it could create the directory, then cancelled the download after 1 or 2%. Copied the files from my spare hdd and it worked like a charm. See my thread HERE

Pretty sure you need a connection for BF3 SP unless i'm mistaken?

Well, on activation you do, but after that, you can just set origin to work offline (Settings>Go offline) and you will be able to play single player. This is what we all did with the VPN trick on BF3 before it was released in the uk.

Could never get Steam to login via mobile internet (GPRS) even via VPN guess its so slow something timesout somewhere - managed it via VPN with a high speed signal tho.

Try anonymitynetwork.com or https://www.vpn4all.com/trial/

How is he going to launch the game for the 1st time on his PC without a connection to Steam? I believe it's part of the DRM.
