Registry Cleaning

Can you recommend any good FREE applications which do a good job of cleaning the memory without causing any issues or problems?

Also a similar program to remove unused/temp files which does a better job than windows.

Need versions for 98, Me, 2000 and XP.

Something else I keep coming across is dog-slow PC's. They all seem to result from having Norton AV on them.

Temporarily close NAV and they are nice and responsive.

Is there certain functions of NAV that can be disabled so it's not such a hog?

It's been a long while since I've used Norton's/Symantec AV, but they always used up way too much memory for my liking. One thought..have a look to see if they have 'check all files' enabled.

I ran those registry and file clean up programs on my own computer.
