Upgraded in 2014. So another upgrade is getting due, maybe this coming year.
None of my upgrades since I went from a pentium II 233 to an 650 Athlon have been as noticably faster; yes that was a few years ago.
The present computer is Amd 6300, Quadro FX1500, 8gb ram; and can't be bothered to go thought the lshw anymore than that.

I will probably look for another cpu motherboard combo.
What CPUs should I be looking for to give me a worthwile upgrade at minimum cost?

Not sure on Buget, what I have to spend would probably be th ebest answer.
I guess I surf and waste time and do a bit of solidworks/inkscape/gimp/ video editing in between.
I have had a little look and recon for about a £100 I should get a ryzen5+board+32Gb ram The right cpu n ram
will get over 4 times the cpu benchmark of mine and 4x the ram, so worth doing.
However I will hold out a while longer and see what happens.

Sounds reasonable, but I think that is a tough ask to get all that for just £100.

Agreed. Not even doable even if going to buy used
If going used, I'd get: Ryzen 3600 + any AM4 board + 16 GB ram

Won't get 32gb ram into the budget unless downgrading the CPU to a 1600/2600 but not worth the sacrifice in performance, even if coming from a FX series CPU with it's pig-like single thread performance.
