Regular desktop screen refreshes?

Hi guys,

Noticing this a lot lately... say I have Word running, half screen, and a folder running next to it, quarter screen - periodically the icons on my desktop simultaneously flicker as if they are refreshing? Any ideas

I've been reading if might be caused by Acrobat Reader? If it is, what are the alternatives? There are loads of 'lite' free options out there, aren't there?
