We are in the process of trying to decomission our 2000 server, I have a 2003 dc with exchange 2003 running.

I sucessfully transferred all the user mailboxes to the new server

I setup the replication of the public folders between the two servers and that seems to be working

I then stopping all exchange services on the 2000 box, at this point user mailboxes would receive email but the mail enabled public folders did not

When I re-enable the services on the 2000 box the mail drops in

Am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks

Have a look at pfmigrate, I have only done it in 2003-2003 and that has a tool builtin that does it, but i'm sure pfmigrate will allow you to move the folders off your 2000 server onto the 2003 server.

I'm not sure if it is where the public folders reside as they are replicated between both servers

Would that stop delivery of mail if one of the replicated servers wasn't running exchange services?

Moving the folders is minor, just pst them and re-setup the mail enable.

Are they actually on the 2003 server when you disconnect the 2000 box?

how can i tell?

at present when i disconnect the 2000 box now mail gets delivered to the public folders

Would have 2 Default SMTP Virtual Servers running cause a problem

I just paused the one on the 2000 box and pulled the network cable out and the public folders seemed to receive mail
