Hi all, so I've bought a new mountain bike that's clocked in at about £2.5k. I have a garage, though it's at the bottom of the street away from home. It's an up and over type jobby, with a single key hole. It's quite a flimsy door.

Now, no attempt has ever been made to break into the garage in my memory (or ever, I think), but I'm still uncomfortable storing the bike in there. Storing it in the house is impossible.

Anyone got any ideas for reinforcing the door? I'd prefer subtlety as those big red garage defenders just scream "There's something in here worth stealing" to me. As it's part of a terrace of garages away from home, the only way in is through the actual door itself, so dead bolts inside aren't an option. Perhaps outside in the bottom corners?

I fitted a couple of Enfield D613 deadbolts to my garage door. Mounted them vertically so the bolt goes into the concrete rather than into the door frame. Pretty solid, and subtle.

Fit a silent alarm.

You're going to really struggle to secure a door like that without significant changes being noticeable from the outside. Equally, using ground anchors and a chain will last minutes at best if they have a grinder with them.

Fitting anchors + chain + something to let you know the garage has been opened would be your best bet.

I have to say though, if I was you I'd be doing everything I possibly could to store the bike in the house. Are none of the wall or ceiling storage options possible for you?

Putting security bolts on a garage door, tells you there something worth nicking in there.

Haven't you got space for a slim lean too shed at home, had one at a previous place, just wide enough to get the bike in.

dead bolts into the concrete.

standard metal garage doors can easily be bent upwards with the brute force of 2 teenagers so you need to make sure the bottom of the door is secure and can not be pulled up because the lock won't stock the door from bending right up like a piece of aluminium.

it makes a lot of noise but is over in about 10 seconds and thieves are likely gone by time someone looks out a window if they even bother in this day and age

As few people seem to have this issue, could you define what you mean by this please :)

GAF (girlfriend acceptance factor) :D

I currently store my bike in the spare room of our flat, however we're moving house soon and as we're getting a garden a ban on inside bike storing has been put in place

I'd be checking your insurance no matter what way you decide to store it, might need to be specified and they might no like it being stored in an unconnected facility.

Had the same problem, takes 2 seconds to get through those up and over doors, replace it with a roller door, more secure looks better and a better fit.
