ok guys whats my options - havent had windows 7 for a long time.

Heres the scenario.
A friend at work gave another colleague her laptop to reinstall windows.- the laptop is an old Acer Aspire 5733.

Now just recently she brought it in to show me it wasnt activated - I activated the laptop via the sticker on the bottom - Windows 7 Home Premium OA.

Now theres a few drivers that are missing so I thought I would update it for her. Good god its soooo slow. I managed to install the Windows Convenience Rollup update. But now checking for any more updates... an hour later it is still 'checking for updates'

Whats my options - the only problem was it wouldnt detect her ipod so I thought I would help out!

Theres no discs from Acer - I have a Full copy of windows 7 Home Premium on disc.... can I reinstall with this and use the key on the computer ?

are the checking of updates working ? does it just take forever ?

Thanks for any advice..

The particular driver from device manager that is highlighted as not installed is
Ethernet controller
PCI simple Communications Controller

(am using it via wifi at the mo)

thanks - working through it.

Morale of the story .... never offer to fix anybodys Windows 7 slow laptop :)

Thanks guys. Gave up in the end. Installed windows 10 for several hours.
All worked fine.
Plugged in ipod shuffle (also old) and didn't pick up the device.
Kill me now :)

Have you downloaded the latest itunes and any drivers from apple's website?
If that's not the case it could be the USB drivers that need sorting out.

Acer only provides a recovery partition along with software to allow creation of bootable recovery media (either just the included bloat or everything), and if this software is missing it's most likely that the OS has been reinstalled with a dodgy key and the original recovery partition has been wiped (but you should be able to reinstall with a generic windows 7 home disc).
