I'm looking to upgrade my CPU soon and for the life of me I can't remember something regarding XP.

a long time ago I upgraded an old system by changing ONLY the cpu. and I don't remember reinstalling XP at that time.

my fuzzy memory seems to think there were three things that governed the validity of an OS install.

ID of the CPU
ID of the MB
ID of the install HDD

and if only one of the 3 changed, then when upgrading there was no need of an reinstall. obviously if I changed a motherboard I'd properly reinstall anyway cos all the MB drivers would need updating for the OS but with just changing the CPU

do I need to reinstall XP?

You might get a "New CPU Detected, please configure settings" or something along those lines at first boot, just press whatever key you have to in order to get into the BIOS. Make sure the clock speed is as it should be and just Save and Exit:)
