Reinstalling fallout 3

Been reinstalling some old games to see how they run on my new rig and it's finally Fallout 3's turn. But before I go popping the DVD in, I wanted to ask a few questions.

I'm a big fan of Steam, biggest reason is that I'm "untidy" and my discs always go missing or scratched. Had a look on their store and they've got the GOTY version with 5 addon packs for £30? Is this a good deal since I've never played any of them.

On my 1st play through my characters a goody-goody small arms/big weapons user, so this time I spice things up by being an evil unarmed/melee ninja! Has anyone done this, or am I just asking for hours of frustration.

Last question, are there any decent mods I should install?

30 pounds is expensive, I got my copy of the GOTY Fallout 3 from the auction site for 17 pounds earlier this year. Mucho happy with that cheap purchase :)

I think Fallout 3 allows you to be a complete ***** if you wanted but a lot of the character interactions relate to your karma. Some options will not be available if you're evil and some other ones will be ...

I'd say skip over FO3 until its on sale (probably xmas or maybe sooner with NV coming out soon). If you already have the full game getting the GOTY for £30 is a bit much. Some DLC are better than others but definitely not worth another £30.

If you try to go pure melee you are dead before you even begin really. You need a few things like Dart Gun as without it you don't have a prayer against the stronger animals. Maybe its possible if you mainline drugs more often to deal with tougher fights. Its not such an issue vs humans and mutants if you can sneak and have good DR (or the broken chinese stealth suit from operation anchorage) but going up against things like Yao Guai is painful, Deathclaws doubly so. I know for a fact its possible to kill Super Mutant Behemoths toe to toe as i doped myself up to the eyeballs and took on the 1 by GNR at mid level with a Shishkebab but obviously not advised.
In general i'd say go Melee/Explosives so you can pack a bunch of grenades and mines for tougher fights or when stealth isn't an option. Problem there is that only Nuka Grenades and Bottlecap Mines do any damage on vanilla so you can only really spam Mines and use them to cripple people.

Check out the FO3 mods thread. Some good ones like FWE and MMM which pretty much change the entire game mechanics to make it tougher. Weapons do considerably more damage so you can tear people apart with automatic weapons in a second but don't let that make you think everything is easy. Deathclaw Matriarchs take 200 bullets from a Minigun at max Big Guns when the original Deathclaw now takes 50. Obviously if you take this route trying for pure melee is possibly suicidal.

Fallout 3 was worth £30, defiantly worth it with the DLC's, but there are better prices out there and on steam every now and again, but since you've already played the main game I'd probably old off until the DLC version is bargain price again on steam. You'll get by just fine as a close combat character, but being able to get up to level 30 will lead you to being a 100 skill point in every skill, monster anyway.
