Hi guys, my brother his wanting to upgrade his pc. Its my cast off so its quite old (x 4 940) so it will need new mobo, cpu and ram. My question is as its already got windows 10 on it (upgraded from 7), should i reinstall 7 first on new pc then upgrade to 10 or just install 10 and be prepared to talk to some guy in india to reactivate if they still allow it?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

You are not licensed to a full copy of Windows 10 as the upgrade rights only allow you to 'piggy back' on an already licensed version of windows, i would imagine if you install 10 and call up they will not allow you to use your Win7 license key to complete the activation process.

Cheers

It depends if it's a retail version of Windows 7 or an OEM. If retail then you'll be fine. You'll need to activate by phone since your hardware id has already been recorded. If it's an OEM then you're out of luck, but to be honest, I'd still try the activation by phone, always worked on Windows 7.

I upgraded my retail Windows 7 to 10, then I changed my motherboard, Windows 10 would no longer activate. I had to re-install 7, then upgrade again.

I believe you can only roll back in the first month, so if it's less than a month since the upgrade you will be fine with this method still.

If still in the rollback period i would do this first.
Then install 7 and upgrade on the new machine.

I've not yet come across anyone that tried to reactivate over the phone on an OEM copy..it always worked on previous versions.

So I have exactly the same question - I am about to replace the motherboard on my PC and I have upgraded from 7 to 10.

I have the key from windows 10 but as I understand it, this was a retail copy of 7 I upgraded from, but can I use the key I have extracted from 10 to install 10 on my new motherboard?
