This is probably a stupid question but I don't want to get half way through and realise I've made a stupid mistake.

I originally had Windows 7 installed on my machine and then I took the free upgrade to Windows 10 and did a complete reinstall while I was at it.

So if I want to reinstall Windows 10 do I have to reinstall Windows 7 first and then upgrade to Windows 10 or can I just download something that will let me reinstall Windows 10 from scratch without having to muck around with Windows 7? I obviously don't have a CD for Windows 10 since I got the free upgrade and I only have a Windows 7 serial number since Windows 10 didn't give me one when I upgraded.

Any help is appreciated :).

nah, if you have upgraded once, the Microsoft servers will have a hash off your motherboard that is has been done so.

Just grab the appropriate install ISO from the Windows 10 site.

Ah cool. Thanks.

Looks like tomorrow I'll be spending reinstalling Windows then. Fun :(.

Hyperseven's spot on - just download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and use it to create an ISO or a USB installer. During the install, you can just skip the two or three times it asks for a licence key (or you could enter your Windows 7 key, if you really want) and it will activate automatically as soon as it gets online as Hyperseven said.

It only takes about 15minutes to install windows 10.......;)

Then another few hours to reinstall all the crap I normally have installed and setup e-mail etc etc...:(
