I now this isn't about GPUs exactly but as part of owning and upgrading our GPUs we often reinstall windows.

Just wanted to share it is possible to reinstall windows without losing most settings and installed programs, I've only tested this on Windows 7 home premium 64 bit but it will work for all other versions.

First you need the proper installation media for your installed version of windows, if you are running sp1 then get the iso including sp1, Windows iso images are readily available from digital river and are totally legitimate. I reinstalled from an iso mounted onto one of my hard drives that wasn't the main windows drive.

The installation DVD or iso must be identical to your installed version of Windows 7.

1. You need to be in windows

2. Browse to the installation DVD and find setup.exe, right click/properties, set compatability mode to Vista SP2.

3. Run setup.exe

4. Choose install now, get latest updates from internet and choose Upgrade

5. Wait (took about 3 hours all in on my machine)
