I've just got an Inspiron 6000 delivered and want to format it and reinstall windows as dell have installed LOADS of rubbish on there.

There is no disc, but there is a 4gb partition that I know is there but can't access in windows. I'm assuming this partition is holding all the files I need to reinstall windows, but how do I access it and start the installation?

thanks

Well....... thing is, the partition probably just contains an image of the system as it was given to you, if it's like my laptop you can press Ctrl+F10 (I think) at the right time on startup to get access to Dell's system restore program that returns the system to it's original state. I doubt you'll be able to get a clean install of Windows, just a case of removing what you don't want.

My 9300 had a program which allowed me to burn a single copy of XP. After I had burned the copy, the program disappeared.

Do you have a similiar program?

I'm certain the the partition just restores the laptop to "as new" XP, so it'll have all the crap on it still.

do you know what the program was called? I can't see anything..

I think you're right though, it will still install all the rubbish I don't want.
I think I'll try just removing all the stuff I don't want and see how it runs

hi, yeah it's a new laptop. I can't see anything obvious on there anywhere.
I'll see what it's like when I've removed all the stuff I don't want.

I do have a legal XP disc I can use but it came with media centre so would be good to use that.

It might be worth contacting customer support. From what I gather Dell stopped shipping XP cd's in favour of this burning program, So you should either have the cd or the program.

Theres a bit of info about it on the Dell forums as far as I can remember.

Sorry I cant be more helpful mate!

I don't know what they're doing now but my laptop (18 months old now) came with neither, just a restore partition.

Thought you had to pay for the actual Windows disc with Dell machines (something like £5?).

I would assume that the partition is purely for restore purposes; but like has been said, perhaps you should chase it up with someone from Dell.

Yeah you have to pay £5 for an original Windows CD. If you look on the dell website they are now all charged in addition to each system and dont come with the system unless you specify you want one.
