Hi folks

As per title

Does anyone know when the next generation of CPU's will be on the market, or even when the next "newer" cpu's will be out? I've been out of touch for ages on the CPU front and want to upgrade from a 939 4200 x2. I heard a rumour that there are some new CPU's due for release in sometime this month, is this true? (or was it the Wolfdale cores I was thinking of which are out already) because if there is likely to be a newer cpu's on the market this month I will hold off upgrading until then.

Also is there likely to be a newer socket out this year to slowly replace 775? or will it remain mainstream for a good while yet (at least this year). I don't want to go for a 775 then find a new socket type gets released in a month or two.

many thanks for any help folks.

On the Intel front:

Intel Core 2 Duo (Wolfdale) 45nm: availability limited (due to a problem with it's temperature sensor apparently)

Intel Core 2 Quad (Yorkfield) 45nm: March 10th

Those are both Socket 775.

Towards christmas Intel will release the Nehalem CPU which is basically the Core 2 Duo with integrated memory controller (like a Athlon), a new serial bus (like AMD HyperTransport) and tripple channel memory.

It will require a new socket and I'm expecting prices to be high as they might release the "Extreme" or as I like to call "People with too much damn money than sense" CPUs.

Socket wise we have:

715 - replacement for 775 - no intergrated memory controller but using Intel's new "bus"
1366 - intergrated memory controller/tripple channel memory/new bus
1160 - same as above but with dual channel memory

I don't think 771 and 1160 can both co-exist so I expect one to be dropped sooner or later.

On the AMD front:

Phenom B3 stepping: June/July maybe? Socket AM2+
Socket AM3 is basically DDR3 support and will be out towards the end of the year. I would like to see a Phenom 45nm to see how it stacks up against Intel.

Coming from a 4200X2 want to upgrade aswell but i think i shall wait for Nehalem unless AMD releases something amazing out of the blue.

I`m also waiting on the Nehalem to be released suposidly on November/December
this year, and im only hoping it doesn't get delayed.

Wouldn't bother waiting to be honest...

I bought...

Q6600
4GB top notch RAM
Decent Asus P5K Premium mobo

£350

Going from an overclocked 4000+ AMD, took couple of hourse to install, its like a totally nice new PC.

Not worth waiting best part of 9 months slash a year really, prices now are damn tasty and will last a good while, I expect you'd get at least half back what you pay now...
