Dell Poweredge Tower server running Windows Server 2022 standard
Used for DHCP, AD, DNS, file storage and Sage server.

I want to run a daily backup online, I haven't chosen the cloud service yet either so all options are open, however there is a M365 business subscription so I have that storage available to me if there is a suitable client.
Data is currently under 1TB.

I was lead to believe Veeam community edition would do this, but it only lets you access the cloud service for restore purposes (I think), the paid for version ~£400 per year, which seems daft.

I am in unknown territory here, but with a desktop machine the cloud service normally provides a free client, is this not an option with servers ?

I can still use Veeam (community edition) for the local backup

I tried a few free solutions but ended up subscribing to backupassist. It's modular in that if you don't need SQL or exchange you don't have to pay for those parts. Tried some restores at random intervals and it seems to be fine, running it a couple of years across multiple sites with one server set as reporting server which emails me a standardised report each night. There will be cheaper out there but I found this to work well for my needs.
"Standalone Cloud Backup + 12 months BackupCare", presumably this would be what i needed, it says £130, I assume that is renewable annually ?

If you purely want to back up flat files to the cloud with ransomeware protection yes, or if you need to make hyper-v or SQL backups and also to other locations like nas/tape/other backups then you'd need the slightly more expensive classic version . You should be able to try before you buy (assuming you do have an azure/S3 type storage available).
no hyper-v, no sql.

Local backups can be handled separately.

Storage hasn't been selected yet, so an S3/Azure can be used. I did sign up to a backblaze trial account, but haven't got to the stage of paying yet.
