i want to get email hosted with a shiny domain name for myself, what options are there for reliability?

i'd like to be able to create extra mailboxes if possible for other people if and when needed.

Set up a mail server in your house, static ip your house, buy yourself a domain and point it at your house, config it all, bobs your uncle :)

right, looking at register1 which seems highly rated on that page, but the cheapest service that does email hosting is £49/year (or £33 over 3years) and that has other fluff which i'll never use like webhosting so seems like a bit of a waste.

fasthosts still looking good as it does just mail which is all i need, for £15/year.

There are other highly rated hosts on there with packages starting from ~£15 a year, they're worth a look.

For reliability and features, the best thing you can do is forward your mail to gmail and use a different reply address so the receiver never knows.
