relocating gpu,powered or unpowered riser?

im moving my 980 gpu to a better place with my wc project(im going to be laying it flat) and a little confused with regards the pci extension cables i would need.

i have seen some on ocuk but they are only 1x to 16x and believe i need a 16x to 16x which i have seen on everyones fav auction site.

some are powered by a molex,some are not..does it need to be powered?

not if only using one, no it doesn't need to be, but it can be if you want
coin miners often use the powered ones because it means they can connect more GPU's to a single motherboard and none of the power needs to come via the motherboard connector
