Remap friendly insurers?

Hi all,

Quick question - has anyone had a remap done and declared it to their insurance company? If so what company are you using, and how much is it costing you?

I want to get one done, but my insurer (Elephant) refuses to cover them - and have said they will never consider covering them. Odd considering they already cover new ECU chips . Unfortunately the 330d doesn't work well with chips.

Not declaring it isn't an option. If you've had a remap done and haven't declared, remember that big brother may be watching :p

Many thanks in advance,

Nick

nick if its a remap done by the obd2 port then i wouldnt declare it cos it wont be detectable by your insurer!if its a chip change then yes i would declare it cos it better to pay £100 a year extra than lose say £10k of car if you have a bump.
most insureres raise price £50-£100 for a 10% power increase but this varies on the car and the age of driver in most cases

Privilege took all my mods brilliantly - I pay a shade under £500 FC (somehow  ) but I'm not complaining! :D

Admiral were good to me with my mods too. :)

Definitely. If its using the standard chip, dont declare it. Only declare it if the chip has been taken out and replaced.

Just in the process of sorting my insurance out on an R32, after my current insurance company appear to have branched out into comedy. Well I found their quote hilarious anyway...

Adrian Flux got me a good quote (they matched what the Admiral/Elephant online thingame did), plus they are quite happy with mods. The stage 4 AMD setup which adds around 45hp (exhaust + cats, cams, remap) will at 15% to the premium which is quite reasonable imo.

There was a case last year which went to court because one of the drivers died in which a Scooby and MG Rover were racing. Part of the court case involved pulling both ECUs out to see what speeds they were traveling at(which turned out to be well over 100mph on normal roads). The guy in court went down on a manslaughter charge due to the evidence from the ECUs.

For what it costs I would always declare a mod like a remap. The dealer wont see it on a normal service(because they arent looking) but if you have a big accident and for some reason they look for it they will find a remap on an ECU. The cost isnt that much more to be fully covered.

Out of interest, if you wrote off a car, would the insurer really bother checking ? (unless your car is especially bling)

.

I woulnt think so but depends on how much damage you cause maybe.

I think it is possible for them to find a remap if they were looking for one. So in a particularly bad crash, they might have a good look to try and get out of paying up. Unlikely, but it's possible you could face an enormous bill if the remap voided your insurance.

Try greenlight, £90 extra for me and i have a revo remap.

Fantastic - cheers for this schnipps. I got my quote back today - £1,350 including the remap! That's before I include my dad on the policy too :D

Many thanks :)
