Remapping the GT4: Worth Using 95RON?

When it comes to remapping my JDM celica GT4, I was thinking the other day if it was worth having it mapped using 95RON as a base fuel...

I'm not going for massive power with this car anyway, I'm thinking 300BHP is prob my cieling (cause you have to start spending silly money after then, 300BHP is an exhaust, intake and boost controller). and a 95RON map would be useful as currently the JDM ST205 has no map below 98RON.

I currently use optimax.

Thoughts?

You won't get 300bhp on 95ron fuel. Your mapper won't be able to dial in much ignition advance, and you wont be able to run much boost.

LOL

Dont be cheap. If you buy a performance jap car you have to expect to run Optimax. Thats why they have higher running costs

Besides you may well find after the remap thats it's more economical anyhow. Mine is a LOT more economical after changing to a different map and gained torque too

Im also a little confused, the celica club recommend staying away from a unichip and getting a boost controller and getting that sorted.

I guess this would have the same effect?

Boost controller will allow you to run more boost, but you can't run a hell of a lot more boost without a remap. I don't know a huge amout about the 3SGTE engine, but IIRC you can run about 1.2bar safely on that engine without any mapping. Don't quote me on that though ;)

Ideally you would want a remap aswell as the boost controller to ensure safe fuelling.

As for the Unichip, they work well if you use a tried and trusted mapper. Unfortunately there are a lot of dodgy Unichip mappers out there.....

Best bet is a full replacement ECU, like the Apexi Power FC. More expensive, but a better option.

Exactly what Drexel says. Put the boost up to about 1bar and youll be sorted. I dont rate the unichip much having used other piggybacks too. Best management would be a new ecu such as a powerfc. But if I were you, run optimax, decat, filter, exhaust and up the boost and you should see approx 300bhp.

well, I can get a relief valve for the ST205 for 25 quid that bumps the boost from 0.9 bar and up it to 1.0 or 1.1 bar.

I don't want a loud exhaust, but apparently if i keep the rest of the exhaust system but replace the cat with a downpipe and sort the intake I could comfortably get 280BHP with the downpipe / intake / relief valve.

I'll quote you on that. 1.2 bar without a remap is fine as long as cooling is spot on (which is will be on the GT4, much better setup than the MR2).

Stay away from Unichips, they're a bit of a bodge to be honest and you can get an Apexi for £420 from Japan so you might aswell go for the full stand alone ECU.

Whatever you decide, definitely get a decat as that makes a MASSIVE difference.

With just an Apexi air filter and Mongoose exhaust I got 259BHP. After fitting the decat there was a noticable increase in power so I'd estimate another 10BHP. Add a grainger valve to the mix and you've got 290-295BHP.

hey, my mate has a rev3 GTS, apparently his standard DV is "clicking". the clicking stops when you put your hand on it.

anyway, where is it best to get a new one. he wants a recirc one.

cheers

Depends on what he wants, Forge you can buy direct IIRC and ones like HKS are probably best bought from Japan from Nengun or Greenline as its cheaper.
