Can anyone tell me, if remapping your car increases bhp and mpg etc then why doesnt the manufacturer sell the car in the already remapped state?

is it like cpu companies deliberatly downclocking the chip thus users need to use a pencil trick to unlock it

Because its putting more stress on the engine, and therefore not running within the tolerances decided to be used for the duration of the warranty.

Plus not all engines are made equal, some may well be fine for years re-mapped, others may break.

my barton from years ago, which i ran very overclocked for years has now started to act odd.

i expect the same will apply to a car's engine over time, esp if owned by a typical 'service it once a year' owner

thats why

Because cars are sold bearing in mind the poor care that the majority of drivers give their cars. By remapping it, you need to take better care of it, such as more frequent oil changes, higher octane fuel etc. Most drivers don't do this, so it would reduce the lifespan of the car dramatically.
People who remap their cars are more likely to take care of them.

because while a remap will give the driver more power, it also tends to increase fuel consumption, make the power delivery more "peaky", increases strain on the drivetrain components, shortens engine/component life, increase the NVH of the car and generally make it a more focused car...something that 99% of buyers don't want.

MOST car buyers want exactly what almost all manufacturers sell ie four wheeled compromises.

i got my Fabia TDi remapped. Garage said it would up bhp from 100-120/125. I did notice a big jump in performance so i'd say this is about right. fuel economy stayed about the same.
