Remember Alan Turing

I've heard of him obviously, but this is the first time I knew about him being a fag. Sounds like OP is making a big deal about nothing. Who cares what he was? He was an extraordinarily clever guy.

Of course his sexuality is important. He was accused of corrupting his lover and forced to choose between imprisonment and a hormone treatment which was basically chemical castration. He chose the latter, became depressed and then killed himself.

The OP isn't making a big deal about nothing.

HE was driven to suicide by people who thoguht being gay was wrong.

without Turing and Flowers:
1) WWII would probably have gone on for a lot longer without their code breaking
2) Computers might not be as sophisticated as they are today
3) WWII could have gone the other way and we'd probably all be german!

We owe these 2 so much and yet they've faded into history

He loved the story of Snow White, and killed himself by eating a poisoned Apple. This is the origin of Apple's logo - the apple with a bit taken out of it.

There's your trivia for the day.

Turing continued to work for the British Government after the war; he was still heavily involved in code breaking.

When he was convicted of homosexuality, Turing's work for the British Government ended. There was a book on him some years ago that suggested his very detailed knowledge of code breaking methods meant that he was considered a threat to national security and assassinated - highly unlikely but maybe not impossible at a time when the UK was so fearful of Russian spies?

That's the sad thing about it all, ironically he's going to be remembered, and still probably is known more now, for being the injustice of his treatment rather than for what he contributed.

Perhaps at least that might help to change attitudes. It would be even worse to suffer and suffering go unnoticed. 41 is no age.
