I'm an old guy now and miss the good old cheap days of enjoying this hobby. Now it more of an investment trying to recoup your money back before the new more expensive thing comes out.
I Did love it back in teh day when you could buy something cheap and get a 50% performance increase out of it with a few minor tweaks here and there.
I've just watched Derbauers vid where he's building his first PC again and it brought back the happy memories or going to the local independant PC shop to buy things you could afford.
Be it a new fan for the sake of having a new fan in there or adding some more memory to your system.
The most Iconic parts from those day for me Were the Athlon XP 1700+ thourghbred paired with some Twinmos PC400 which had Winbond BH5 chips on it. Those were fun days.

The good old days! I really enjoyed the Athlon XP days. They are what got me into overclocking! I still have a very nice set of crucial ballistix ram. Thank you for reminding me of the fun I used to have with computers :)

Those were good times but to be honest you can still get a nice setup with great performance for reasonable money. Some of the lower end Alder Lakes are really fast, and not too expensive paired with DDR4.
