Haven't seen this up here yet, and i also searched the last few pages and searched under remembrance and also bank holiday and didn't fin owt so dont shoot the messenger if it's already been up. Received this from a friend on another forum and thought it was quite a worthwhile petition to sign up to that also has the added benefit of giving workers an extra bank holiday between Aug/Dec.

-------------------------------------------

Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition that was launched requesting a new public holiday falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year.* *

To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday , it's got three aims: *

1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain

2. To remind people of the importance of protecting our Nation and what it stands for;

3. To break that 3 month period between the August Public Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no long weekends, especially as the UKhas fewer public holidays than most European Countries.* *

If you agree to the idea, please sign up to the petition - it doesn't take long - and it would be great if you were to forward the link to other people as well. If you are not interested, just hit the delete key. This is not just about another bank holiday, but more importantly about having a designated day to remember all those people that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. * *

THIS IS A NOTABLE PETITION THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAVE ASKED FOR PLEASE SIGN IF YOU WANT AN EXTRA BANK HOLIDAY* *

They would probably take a day elsewhere.

Queen's birthday get's my vote as it's at a nicer (warmer) time of year.

June 14th Anyone?

Oddly enough, I'm against a Remembrance holiday. Honouring our servicemen and women is done on Remembrance Sunday and the 11th of November, that's what they are for. Having the Monday off for it as well is just a cheap excuse for a holiday, it would have nothing to do with remembrance.

How about making St. George's day a holiday, i.e. the English national day?!

Oh wait, we're all to busy celebrating St. Patricks day (sssh, it's more politically correct!)

We've already got that day, it's called Rememberance Sunday.

There we go, this has nothing to do with remembering amazing people, just some bloke in a suit has prolly come out with some statistic showing how peoples job performance is down during that time of the year 'cos people in this country work way more hours than people in other EU countries.

I agree. As much as i want to honour our servicemen and women, I'd rather see more of a big deal made out of our national day. Or the Queen's birthday! And then subsequently the King's birthday and so on.

Another pointless e-petition

Indeed. An excuse for the masses to think that they're making a difference and contributing to democracy, when turnout rates for elections are at n all time low.

'What? Click a link for to endorse a cause that i've given absolutely no consideration - sure thing - as long as you give me a link - typing is soo difficult'

'Voting? What...actually walking to a polling station...are you MAD?'

The other option that i would be more in favour of (the above was cut/paste without much thought really) would be to make the 11th November, no matter what day it lands on, Remembrance Day.

'Voting? What...actually walking to a polling station...are you MAD?'

Yes, but if they actually made use of technology and allowed people to vote online then it would mean more people have access to vote. At present i have asked to vote by post each year, each year it gets ignored and i get a polling card through my front door. Only over the past 2-3 years have i had the time to actually go and vote due to commuting a long distance to work and back.

Perhaps. But i'd rather decisions about the future of the country were made by people who can be bothered to get off their backsides and go and vote (as this would imply some level of commitment and be a sign that they may consider who to vote for), than someone getting an email and going 'Cool - voting time...<click>..<click>...erm...well, he's got a cool name...<click>....now....back to COD4'

Yes, but just walking down to the voting station doesn't mean they understand who/why to vote for someone. The amount of people i know in wakey/leeds who vote labour solely because they or their parents can remember what Maggie Thatcher 'did' to the country (read them personally) and the mining industry in Yorkshire so they don't want them conservatives back in at any cost is quite frightening. You ask them a serious question about education or health or foreign policy and they just shrug and aren't interested.
