Sorry for the newbie question. I have an Abit NF7-S 2.0 with a 2800XP+ processor, out of date a know but that's another issue.

I currently have 512 meg PC3200 DDR ram, (2 sticks of 256).

I want to upgrade to a gig, can I just put in a stick of 512 in the third slot so I have 1x 512 and 2x 256?

Cheers,
Dave

But tbh dual channel doesn't make much difference at all on socket A.

Had a huge argument with a guy about this that just wouldn't believe me. Glad someone knows what they're talkin about :D

No it won't be running dual channel if you have 3 sticks of RAM.

But tbh dual channel doesn't make much difference at all on socket A.

This board only has 3 RAM slots so it would run in dual channel with the suggested config. Makes little difference tho

Will work but will need to have same make of ram with same timings also for best chance.

Only makes about 10% differance though on socket A

Well, what do you know, I already had a gig of ram, just had one of 512 sicks in the wrong slot so it wasn't working! So when I plugged my new one in, all 3 slots were full and I now have 1.5gig.

I'm annoyed at myself for buying extra when I didn't really need it, but I must say that the boost from 512 to 1.5 gig is rather nice! Finally I can run the programs I need use for my work without waiting ages for them to open and close. :)
