My friend is asking about upgrading his PS3 harddrive, and i can't remember if it needs to be SATA or SATA II... I rememeber it's arguably preferrred to be 5400rpm.

Can PS3 even do 500Gb? Last i checked the largest drive available was the WD 320GB (SATA II) for the PS3. Well it was PS3 approved anyway.

PS3 is not limited to HDD size as in GBs but rather the physical properties of the HDD. Theres a Samsung 500GB drive out thats fine with the PS3, not sure if theres a larger capacity 2.5" sata 2 drive. I'm sure theres a few people on here than use some kind of adaptor to use a 3.5" Sata drive with there PS3.

Quick Q. Ive put a 320GB drive in mine, but whilst it formats at 298GB total space, even after a fresh wipe and just the barebones, I only have 260GB available to use. Its no big deal really, as its hardly the whole drive, but its quite a chunk of the HDD its decided it wont let me use!

mines the same, got around ~260gb of free space to use after a fresh install.

i got a sata 2 drive and it worked fine (got a 320gb, 5400rpm seagate). i decided on 5400rpm instead of 7200 as i didnt want to risk an increase in heat which could potenially increase fan speed (noise) and i also read that the performance boost is pretty minimal.

most important thing is to get a decent screwdriver which fits as the screws are super tight and easy to strip... i had a really crappy small screw driver and it took me like 40 mins+ to remove 1 of 4 screws, while stripping another. then i found a decent one, and the remaining ones took less than 20 seconds lol.

IIRC the PS3 reserves a percentage of the HDD for it's own uses... can't remember what though sorry!
