I've just got an asrock ion 330 setup next to the tv etc and dont want to further clutter the area with mouse/keyboard. I thought I could remote desktop into the htpc and start movies etc, but forgot that doing this just displays the desktop on the remote viewer, and the local monitor just show the login screen :D :o

How do I get around this problem?

Can't remember if Remote Desktop has such a setting, but you could just use VNC instead which doesn't lock the local screen.

I tried vnc - it didnt update the remote viewer screen so wasnt much use.

That was when I was trying win7 remote into htpc(ubuntu). I've changed the htpc into xp cos audio over hdmi was too much of a pita in lunix.

Logmein, RemotelyAnywhere, Remote desktop help request. But it seems weird to use another PC to control your computer... You can get mini wireless keyboards with trackballs built in or you can get rather advanced remotes.

thanks i'll give those a try.

I got abit further with vnc - the viewer closes as soon enter is pressed on the login screen, but at least the viewer updates, albeit rather slowly.

logmein just stays at ablank white screen in the web browser just after hitting conect. I thought logmein was meant to bypass routers etc because it uses 80/443??

No, it 'bypasses' routers because it is a reverse connection. The PC establishes the connection to logmein servers, not the other way around. A software firewall that blocked internet access on a process/outgoing connection basis may well screw it up though.

Your latency via a server based solution such as logmein would go **** up when you started playing a video.

I have never had any issues with UltraVNC, which you need the full install for on the HTPC and just the ultravnc.exe client on the machine you want to connect from.

I still say just get a mini keyboard or remote. I don't get what the OP will be doing, using a laptop/netbook or running off to another room to play/pause, both are mad.

we use VNC at work, it shouldnt kick you off when you log on to windows.. it might do it if its trying to change resolutions maybe??

I've actually experienced that bug with VNC too with Vista, worked fine with XP. Never got to the bottom of it unfortunately.
