Remote access to home server

Hi folks

I'm working away from home in a few weeks and will require access to my home server. Not going down the Logmein etc route how can I set this up.

All PC's running Win7 Ultimate

You'll probably need a VPN and use RDP. Is there anything particularly wrong with Logmein? It's much easier and faster to setup and can perform just as well.

It just feels slow and low resolution.
